About this formation
Manchester United is currently in a position where they have to either plya a diamond or a three at the back. I have an idea where the balance is right and perhaps can even make the team play some good football for the rest of the season.
In this formation, as you can see, the positioning is something like a 3-2-diamond-1. I'm leaving Falcao or Van Persie all the space they need to play as the lone striker with the support of 4 midfielders and ONE wing back (notice I said ONE only).
Starting from the back, we got 3~5 man defense. But in this formation, Shaw and Valencia are not both either full backs nor are they wing backs. Shaw is a LB but Valencia is a RWB. I'll explain their roles a lot more later but for now, they are just in the right positions. Shaw is a defender who can attack, so why force him to play as a wing back? He should be a defender primarily and be a secondary option in the attack, just like how a fullback is nowadays. Valencia is a right wing by his trade, but as a make shift full back, he has relatively done well as a defender. But to commit him as a full back is not a good idea so put him as a Wing back primarily. He will attack more often than Shaw. Being a wing who track back and defend as a defender. But that leaves a lot of space doesn't it? that's why he has Jones and Rojo to cover for him. As well as Carrick.
Blind being the midfield sweeper(a player who plays as central defense and DM who collects and sweeps the ball defensively, and offensively) who will engage in the attack at times. Initiating good balls just like he did in the S'TON game and FA Cup game. He is a trustworthy and versatile player LvG can rely on. He will havethe support of Rojo, Shaw, and Jones. He will also support hte likes of Di Maria and Rooney.
Di maria will now have a lot of space to play in. He can now take on defenders and also freely go to postions he is comfortable in. He can whip crosses in and play as a wing as times having Shaw behind him always.
That's all I kinda have to say about this. The rest are pretty self explanatory. Jones and Rojo will be full time CBs. Carrick will be at the base ofthe diamond
