About this formation

Three defence - Lucio and Ranocchia as tall, physical Centre backs to intercept opposition attacks, with Samuel as a sweeper to clean up any attacks that get through.

Cambiasso as a holding midfielder to link defence to the more advanced players, break up opposition attacks, and distribute to the wide players (nagatomo/maicon)

Maicon as a very offensive wing back that presses high, disrupts opposition movement in their own half, and provides an wide attacking threat on the right.

Nagatomo as more of a supporting wing back, that supplies the ball to Alvarez and T.Motta, plays a bit deeper than Maicon does, but occasionally overlaps Alvarez and provides a threat down the left.

T.Motta has the same role as Cambiasso but plays a bit more offensive and his main role is to provide support from behind.

Sneijder as an offensive midfielder that collects the ball mostly from T.Motta and looks to play Pazzini on through balls, Maicon for crosses,Alvarez to switch possession, and will occasionally shoot in space.

Alvarez will look to provide width and stretch the opposition's defence, provide crosses, alternate between taking a role on the right side of the pitch and cutting inside onto his right foot, staying on the left and crossing, and making runs to open up space for his teammates to play into.

Pazzini will look to sit on the deepest centre back and occasionally make runs to drag the defence to one side of the pitch opening up space for his teammates to expolit, and get on the end of any attacks and be a clinical finisher.
