About this formation

Spain won the 2010 World Cup final against Holland using this formation, despite using the change kit, to avoid clashing against orange. The starting 11 interestingly includes Barcelona and Real Madrid players bar one, Joan Capdevila playing for Villarreal.

Sevilla's Jesus Navas came on for Pedro in the 60th minute, Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas on for Xabi Alonso after 87 minutes, and Liverpool forward Fernando Torres replacing David Villa after 106 minutes.

The final was a ugly affair: it included Nigel de Jong brutally kicking Xabi Alonso in the chest, and referee Howard Webb dealing out 13 yellow cards, and 1 red card for Holland defender Johnny Heitinga. But, Spain clinched victory when Rafael van der Vaart (then playing for Real Madrid) could not prevent Andres Iniesta scoring the winning goal past Maarten Stekelenburg.

It was Spain's first ever World Cup victory, and to add a third major trophy to their records after winning Euro 2008 two years earlier. The victory also came over their former colony, but for Holland it was the third WC final they had reached (after 1974 and 1978) and they'd lost all three. Amazingly, Spain had lost their opening game against Switzerland, scored only 8 goals in the tournament, and won all their knockout games with a 1-0 victory. Since the 2010 World Cup final, Spain and Holland have dominated the rankings table.

Spain's journey to the final:
L 0-1 - Switzerland
W 2-0 - Honduras
W 2-1 - Chile
W 1-0 - Portugal
W 1-0 - Paraguay
W 1-0 - Germany
W 1-0 - Holland
