About this formation
The Brazilian team that defeated Italy 4-1 in the 1970 World Cup final has to be the greatest team ever, although Barcelona's current superstars are coming ever nearer than the likes of Pele, the best player of all time. Brazil totally beat Italy, who had their very defensive Catenaccio system.
It's a great side, and for Pele it was compensation for his last two World Cups. He was a member of the 1958 winning side, and although Brazil retained it in 1962 he tore his thigh muscle in only the second game, and, he was injured again in 1966 as Brazil exited without getting past the group stage.
But, he was a part of the 1970 side, whom the likes of himself, Jairzinho, Tostao, Gerson, Carlos Alberto and Roberto Rivelino destroyed not only Italy in the final, but beat England in the group stage, but that match is better remembered for Gordon Banks's unbelievable save against Pele.
The fourth goal was a brilliant move by Brazil which confirmed them their third World Cup in just 12 years. Clodoaldo started the move, and then found Rivelino, who fired a pass down the touchline. Jairzinho controlled the ball instantly, and shielded it from Italian defenders, before feeding Pele. Pele then spotted Carlos Alberto running on the right flank, and passed the ball. Carlos Alberto let fly with a booming shot that rumbled the net in an incredible 4-1 victory. It was Pele's last match for Brazil, so the 1970 World Cup win was a great send-off for the greatest player ever.
