About this formation
The United States cannot match most other international squads with talent, so they are forced to play defensively. Which sure enough is the weakest area for them. With the benefit of a couple potential US players the team looks much more solid and can then push out and stay on the attack with a more sound defense in support.
I choose the 4-1-3-2 because it provides a good mix of opportunity for counter attacking with the 2 young strikers Agudelo and Sapong and also allows the ball to get wide for crosses sent in by Donovan and with luck on our side Holden. Again since the U.S. is at a disadvantage on pure talent, this plays to the our strengths. If it does get messy and these 2 systems fail we can also rely on Holden, Dempsey and Donovan to come through and tuck one away being as they are easily the most talented on the squad and have demonstrated a knack for goal scoring.
