About this formation
Team: Real Madrid
Era: 1997-2002
This is a modified version of former Argentina and Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa's 3-3-1-3 formation. It basically contains 4 attacking and 6 defensive players.
When in possession of the ball, the team would use the ball retention skills of the two central midfielders and their ability to create interplays with the winger forwards or wing backs to move the ball forward.
On attack, the wing forwards are regularly expected to join the striker in the box while the wing backs take their place on the wing. Alternatively, if playing through the center, the wingbacks can make runs into the center of the opposition's midfield and to thus try and overwhelm the defensive players there creating an opening for either the striker or the playmaker to score. The holding midfielder would in both these cases sit just ahead of the center circle in the opponents half dictating the offensive play.
On defence, the sweeper can join the holding midfielder in midfield and the wing backs can move behind the midfield to create a basic 4 defenders + 2 defensive midfielders structure. They can be then supported by the wing forwards who can be tasked to mark the opposition full backs. Alternatively, the wing backs can move closer to the holding midfielder with the sweeper moving back and in line with the central defenders to create two lines of 3 to deal with less intense offensive threats.
With a healthy offensive balance of consistent performers(Zanetti, Carlos, Figo) and big game players(Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Zidane), great defensive talent (Hierro, Thuram, Maldini) at the back, a strong holding midfielder(Redondo) capable of winnning as well as retaining and distributing the ball and a superb goalkeeper at the back, this team playing in this structure would be very difficult to beat for any combination of players.
