focus of the formation is the CAM - enganche.
enganche provide lateral support to other 4 offensive players. create routes for the ball to move forward through series of one touch passes.The fullback(s) in 4-4-2 diamond must push for width. as the offensive players are usually driven by enganche into concentration, and large portion of the midfield would not be left uncovered.
A great formation for teams with 3 hardworking midfielders and 1 outstanding playmaker (for example, Werder Bremen use Baumann/Frings/Borowski, and Diego as the playmaker). AC Milan have used a version of this formation, under Ancelotti, with Rui Costa or Kaka as the playmaker, and 3 midfielders more withdrawn (eg. Pirlo, Gattuso, Seedorf).
The lineup is very flexible can be converted from a very defensive formation to a good attacking it is also a 4-4-2 in a sense because when the play is one zone the other two from the front two are free and it is similar to 4-4-2 so its up to players and managers when to play 4-3-1-2 or classic 4-4-2.
Much easier to organise at manager level as each team member can be responsible at stopping an opposition player from taking a shot and scoring.
