Liverpool Football Formation
Lineup (4-4-1-1)
Clemence · Hansen · Carragher · Smith · Hughes · Souness · Molby · Gerrard · Barnes · Dalglish · RushIt's pretty much impossible to choose any formation for an all-time Liverpool formation, as it was what carried this side throughout its time as the dominant club in world football.
The only particular selection problems were as follows:
GK: Both Grobelaar and Reina have strong claims, but Clemence was the lynchpin of the first set of great Liverpool sides during the 70s.
CB: Lawrenson, Sami Hyypia both have a claim to this spot. Carragher's run of excellence lasting over a decade makes his selection alongside Hansen a bit easier.
RB: Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol both have a strong claim to this spot, as it would make the most sense for either one of these utility men to slot in here. It's too difficult, though, to leave out 'The Anfield Iron.' He was an immense cog in the rise of Liverpool to European dominance in the 1960s and 70s.
CM: Souness and Gerrard had to be in the first XI, but where to play Gerrard? I've opted to put him out on the right over Ian Callaghan and Peter Beardsley, and slot Jan Molby (perhaps the finest passer in Liverpool's history, Xabi Alonso included) into a CM berth alongside Souness.
LW: I took Barnes over Billy Liddell, who was a brilliant player that also played as a striker. Barnes was simply Liverpool's best player in the late 1980s and early 90s, an absolute force with immense talent in either foot.
