Starting Lineup

SK Rapid relies on a defensive identity, playing within a 5-4-1 formation. The team is built to sit deep and react to the opposition, looking to use a counter attacking style to exploit space. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and strike when the opponent leaves gaps.

Druijf guards the goal as the goalkeeper. The defensive unit consists of a back five that can drop into a low block easily. Oswald and Grgic occupy the left and right centre back positions, while Schaub sits in the middle of the trio to command the area. Jansson acts as the left wing back, providing width in the attacking phase but primarily focusing to cover the wide areas. Seidl plays as the right wing back to do the same on the opposite flank. The unit stays compact to prevent any penetration through the middle.

The midfield features a double pivot with J. Auer and Bolla sitting in front of the defense. J. Auer and Bolla work to shield the back five and intercept passes before they reach the central defenders. Ahead of them, Cvetkovic and Raux Yao operate in wide attacking midfield roles. Cvetkovic and Raux Yao must track back to help the wing backs when the team loses possession. This bank of four helps the team maintain a solid block when defending.

A lone striker, Hedl, leads the line for SK Rapid. Hedl must hold up the ball to allow the midfield and wing backs to move up the pitch. When the team wins the ball, Cvetkovic and Raux Yao look to carry the ball forward or play through the lines to find the striker. Jansson and Seidl push up high to provide width and deliver crosses into the box. The team looks to hit in behind on the transition to catch the opponent off guard.

The main tactical advantages of this formation include a very strong defensive block that is hard to break down. By sitting deep, the team creates compactness when defending. Another strength is the ability to use the wing backs to create width once the ball is won. This can lead to quick transitions where the team can overlap the winger and find Hedl in central areas.
