Starting Lineup

TOM (HENDRIKS) · DEAN (JAMES) · REDOUAN (EL YAAKOUBI) · JOSHUA (BRENET) · JONATHAN (DE GUZMÁN) · WULFERT (VAN GINKEL) · MILAN (DE HAAN) · LUUK (BROUWERS) · CAREL (EITING) · COUHAIB (DRIOUECH) · DARIUS (JOHNSON)

The Netherlands play with a vertical identity using a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup focuses on controlling the central areas to launch quick attacks. It is built to dominate the middle of the pitch and use the width of the field through wide midfielders to stretch the defence.

TOM stays between the posts to organize the back line. The Netherlands defend with a back three composed of DEAN, REDOUAN, and JOSHUA. DEAN and JOSHUA act as wide centre backs who can push up to support the midfield or track runners. REDOUAN sits in the center to defend zonally and win the header when long balls come in. The defensive unit works to stay compact and squeeze the space between the lines.

In the middle of the pitch, CAREL operates as an attacking ten behind the two strikers. MILAN and WULFERT form a central pairing to control the tempo. MILAN works to shield the defence and win the second ball, while WULFERT drives forward with the ball to carry it into the final third. LUUK and JONATHAN provide the width, acting as wide midfielders who can overlap the attackers or drop back to defend. This midfield unit links the defence and attack by playing short from the back and finding the feet of the striker.

The attacking unit features a partnership of two forwards, DARIUS and COUHAIB. DARIUS acts as a presence to hold up the ball, allowing COUHAIB to make runs in behind the defence. They combine in tight spaces to break the line and create chances. LUUK and JONATHAN push high to provide width, which helps to pin the last defender and create space for CAREL to arrive late into the box. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, such as numerical superiority in the midfield when MILAN and WULFERT combine with CAREL to bypass the midfield. The team can also create wide overloads as LUUK and JONATHAN push up to support the attack and cross the ball. By using three central defenders, the team remains solid against counter attacks and can quickly switch play to the wings to exploit gaps.

The 3-5-2 formation allows the Netherlands to dominate central areas while maintaining defensive stability. This lineup is best suited for games against teams that play with a narrow midfield and lack wide players.
