Starting Lineup
White (4) · Saliba (2) · Gabriel (6) · Timber (12) · Raya (22) · Guimaraes (39) · Ødegaard (8 (C)) · Rice (41) · Saka (7) · Trossard (19) · Havertz (29)Arsenal focuses on a heavy high press and quick verticality in a 5-2-3. This formation is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and use the width of the field to stretch the opposition. The Gunners aim to dominate games by squeezing the space in the opponent half and creating chances through rapid transitions.
Raya operates between the posts to act as a sweeper behind a high line. The defensive unit functions as a back three with Guimaraes, Saliba, and Gabriel. Saliba acts as a ball playing defender with great recovery speed, while Gabriel provides massive aerial strength in the box. Guimaraes sits in the middle to provide cover and help play out from the back. White and Timber act as attacking wing backs on each side. White will push high to overlap the winger, while Timber provides width and tracks back to help the defense.
The midfield relies on a two man unit to control the center of the pitch. Rice acts as the primary shield for the defense, using his energy to press aggressively and win the second ball. Ødegaard operates as the creative engine, looking to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines with his exceptional passing range. These two must stay compact to prevent teams from playing through the middle, and they work to connect the back three to the front three.
In the attacking third, Arsenal employs three attackers to pin the last defender. Havertz plays as a lone striker, using his height to hold up the ball and link up play with the midfielders. Saka plays as an inverted winger on the right, frequently cutting inside to shoot or create. Trossard operates on the left, looking to exploit the space created by Timber. This front line is designed to press from the front, forcing the opposition to play long balls that the central defenders can win.
One major advantage for Arsenal is the ability to create wide overloads when White and Saka combine on the flank. The team also benefits from numerical superiority in the defensive third, making them very difficult to break down when sitting in a mid block. The coordination between the wing backs and the wide attackers allows the team to switch play quickly to find isolated one on one situations.
This 5-2-3 formation allows the team to stay solid while remaining dangerous on the break. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line or struggle with intense pressing.
