Reijnders operates in the center to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines. On the left, Leao provides much width and dribbling ability, whereas Pulisic moves into the half spaces to create chances from the right.

Zirkzee operates as a lone striker and works hard to press from the front. He functions as a focal point to hold up the ball and allow the midfielders to push up. When Milan moves forward, Leao and Pulisic act as wide threats to stretch the defense. The team attacks in combinations where Reijnders and the wingers look to play one-twos to break the line. Zirkzee often drops deep to link up play, which creates space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box.

This formation offers Milan the advantage of compactness when defending deep in their own half. By using a five man midfield, they can easily compress the midfield and deny the turn to opposition playmakers.
