Starting Lineup

Mexico relies on a defensive and vertical identity using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and strike quickly once the ball is won. The goal is to maintain a compact block and use the width of the pitch through the wing backs to stretch the defence.

A three man formation occupies the midfield with ROMO acting as a single pivot. ROMO stays deep to shield the defence and break the line of the opposition press. SANCHEZ and CHAVEZ play as the two central midfielders to connect the defensive and attacking lines. They look to win the second ball and carry the ball forward to drive into the half spaces. This trio works to squeeze the space in the middle and deny the turn to opposing attackers.

In the final third, the team utilizes two forwards in a partnership. QUIÑONES and GIMENEZ act as the primary goal threats, often working in combinations to break the defence. They focus on playing through the lines and making runs in behind to exploit the space left by the opposition. Because the wing backs provide the width, QUIÑONES and GIMENEZ often pull wide to create space for late runs into the box or stay central to find the feet of the striker.

Defending in a narrow defensive block is a major strength for Mexico, making it very hard for opponents to play through the middle. The formation also offers wide overloads when the wing backs push up to join the attack. This creates high level passing lanes and allows the team to switch play quickly.
