Starting Lineup

PETROVIC · DISASI · CHALOBAH · CUCURELLA (Maatsen) · JAMES (Gusto) · EZE (Mudryk) · PALMER (Estevão) · CAICEDO (Schouten) · ENZO (Ugochukwu) · GYÖKERES (Nkunku) · GALLAGHER (Páez) - (Chukwuemeka)

Chelsea aims to play a vertical style of football focused on quick transitions and direct play. This lineup uses a 5-2-3 formation to create immediate threats in the final third. By sitting in a compact block, the team looks to win the ball and hit the opposition in behind before they can recover their positions.

PETROVIC stands as the last line of defense to sweep behind the back line. The defense operates as a back five where CAICEDO sits in the middle to anchor the unit. CHALOBAH and DISASI play as the wide center backs to cover the half spaces and win headers. On the flanks, JAMES and CUCURELLA act as attacking wing backs to provide width. JAMES uses his strength to support the attack from wide positions, while CUCURELLA can tuck in to help the central defenders when the ball is on the opposite side.

The midfield relies on a double pivot of ENZO and GALLAGHER to control the center of the pitch. ENZO acts as a deep lying playmaker with a wide passing range to find the attackers and switch the play. GALLAGHER uses his high pressing intensity to win the ball back high up the pitch and drive the team forward. This pairing links the defense to the attack, with ENZO looking to recycle possession while GALLAGHER makes late runs into the box to support the strikers.

In the attacking phase, GYÖKERES leads the line as a physical presence to hold up the ball and link play. He is supported by EZE and PALMER, who act as inverted wingers. EZE looks to cut inside to create chances in the half spaces, while PALMER uses his dribbling to find space and play through the lines. This front three works to press the opposition back line and create runs in behind. The team relies on the wingers to stretch the defense and create space for GYÖKERES to work in the box.

A major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs push high to provide width. The midfield also benefits from the speed of transition when ENZO finds the forwards quickly after a turnover. Additionally, the presence of three central defenders provides great compactness when defending in a mid block or a low block.

This 5-2-3 formation is built to exploit teams that leave space in behind. It is a powerful tool for Chelsea when playing against opponents that dominate possession but struggle with defensive pace.
