Poland aims to control the center of the pitch through a compact mid-block using a 3-5-2. This formation is built to play a direct style of football that relies on winning second balls and using the physicality of the forwards. The Red Devils want to squeeze the space in the middle to force opponents to play wide.
Wojciech Szczesny sits between the posts to command the defensive area. Behind him, the back three consists of Jakub Bednarek, Pawel Dawidowicz, and Jakup Kiwior. Bednarek and Dawidowicz act as the central pillars, while Kiwior provides cover on the left side of the defensive line. This unit functions to defend zonally and protect the space behind the midfield. The defenders must stay narrow to deny central passing lanes and ensure the team stays compact when the opposition has the ball.
The midfield operates with a central trio supported by wide players. Bartlomiej Slisz acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Alongside him, Sebastian Szymanski and Piotr Zielinski operate in the half spaces to connect the lines. Zielinski uses his passing range to drive the team forward, while Szymanski looks to arrive late into the box. On the flanks, Nicola Zalewski and Patrick Frankowski act as wing backs to provide width. They must track back to support the defence and then push up to overlap when the team wins the ball.
In the attacking third, Poland uses two forwards in a partnership. Robert Lewandowski works as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender, while Arkadiusz Milik plays as a second striker. They look to link up play between the lines and use combinations to break the line. The attack is built by finding the feet of the strikers or hitting in behind on the transition. The wing backs, Zalewski and Frankowski, are tasked to deliver crosses from wide areas to exploit the aerial strength of the forwards in the box.
This lineup offers significant advantages in central areas. The three central midfielders and three central defenders create numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. The team can also use wide overloads from the wing backs to stretch the defence. This makes Poland very hard to break down when they sit deep and wait to counter at pace.
The 3-5-2 formation gives Poland a robust way to control central zones and exploit the flanks. It is best suited for matches against teams that rely heavily on central playmakers.
