K.Chamorro stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back five consists of a central trio and two wide wing backs. F.Calvo (C) leads the defense as a dominant presence in the air, while J.Vargas and D.Chacón provide cover to protect the middle. K.Fuller acts as an attacking wing back on the right to push up the pitch, and R.Matarrita performs the same role on the left. This unit works together to hold a narrow defensive block and squeeze the space between the lines.

A double pivot provides the foundation for the midfield. O.Galo and B.Aguilera sit in front of the defense to shield the back five and win the second ball. These two players work to intercept passes and recycle possession when needed. Ahead of them, Á.Zamora and J.Bennete operate in the half spaces to link the midfield and the attack. Á.Zamora and J.Bennete are tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high when the opposition enters their half.

The attack relies on a lone striker to lead the line. M.Ugalde plays as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line. He must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the play. The wide players, Á.Zamora and J.Bennete, look to cut inside or deliver crosses from wide areas to find M.Ugalde. The team builds attacks by hitting in behind on the transition, using the pace of the wing backs and the movement of the forwards to catch the opponent out of position.

This formation offers Costa Rica the advantage of compactness when defending in a low block. By crowding the central zones, they force the opposition to play wide and away from goal. The presence of K.Fuller and R.Matarrita also allows for wide overloads when they push forward during an attack. This ability to shift between a heavy defensive block and a quick counter at pace makes them difficult to break down.
