Inter relies on a high press and quick transitions to control games through a 3-5-2. This formation is built to play a vertical style that uses the width of the pitch while maintaining a very strong central presence. The Inter lineup aims to squeeze the space in the middle and win the ball back high up the pitch to catch opponents off guard.

Yann Sommer plays behind a back three that provides both stability and the ability to play out from the back. Benjamin Pavard operates as the right centre-back to provide cover and intercept passes, while Giorgio Scalvini holds the central position to win the header and anchor the line. Alessandro Bastoni acts as the left centre-back, using his passing range to progress through the thirds. The defensive unit works as a cohesive block to deny the turn to any advancing attackers.

The midfield functions with a single pivot where Hakan Çalhanoglu sits deep to shield the defence and recycle possession. He uses his passing range to find teammates and switch play effectively. Nicolo Barella plays as a carrier to drive forward with the ball, while Davide Frattesi makes late runs into the box to support the attack. Federico Dimarco and Denzel Dumfries act as wing backs who spread wide to provide width, pushing high to overlap the midfield and stretch the defence.

The attack features a partnership of two forwards to create constant movement. Lautaro Martínez operates as a pressing centre-forward who works to pin the last defender and find the feet of his partner. Marcus Thuram plays alongside him, using his strength to hold up the ball and create link-up play between the lines. The two forwards combine in tight spaces to create runs in behind or pull wide to create space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield when the wing backs push high. This allows the team to compress the midfield and dominate the center of the pitch. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the wing backs and the two strikers can quickly attack the space behind a high defensive line.

This 3-5-2 formation creates a very compact defensive block that is difficult to break down centrally. It is best suited for matches against teams that play with a single pivot or those that struggle to deal with constant pressure from wide areas.
