The midfield functions with a double pivot that connects the defence to the attack. Rodri acts as the primary shield for the defence, sitting deep to intercept passes and recycle possession. Stones plays alongside him, often stepping into midfield to carry the ball forward and create an extra man in central areas. On the flanks, De Bruyne and Kovacic operate in the wide midfield roles, with De Bruyne using his passing range to break the line and Kovacic helping to press in a mid-block and provide stability.

In the final third, the team employs three attackers to stretch the defence. Haaland operates as a lone striker and a physical presence in the box, looking to hit in behind on the transition or hold up the ball for others. Foden and Silva act as inverted wingers who cut inside to find space in the half spaces. Foden uses his dribbling style to move towards the goal, while Silva moves between the lines to link play. This attacking setup creates many combinations, especially through quick one-twos and movement to pull defenders out of position.

One major advantage for Man City is the numerical superiority in midfield when Stones steps up to join Rodri.
