Ukraine seeks to control the tempo through a mid-block setup using a 4-5-1. This formation focuses on winning the ball in central areas and using quick transitions to exploit space. The lineup is built to provide defensive stability while allowing creative players to find pockets of space between the opposition lines.

A.Lunin operates between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back four maintains a relatively flat line to deny runs in behind. V.Mykolenko and Y.Konoplya play as wide defenders, looking to support the midfield when the team has possession. In the center, I.Zabarnyi and M.Matvienko work as a central pairing where Zabarnyi uses his aerial strength and Matvienko provides cover. This defensive group works to stay compact and squeeze the space when the ball enters their half.

The midfield operates with a three-man central core and two attacking midfielders. O.Zinchenko (C) acts as the captain and orchestrates play from the left side of the midfield, often dropping deep to help build play from the back. M.Shaparenko and H.Sudakov provide the engine in the center, with Sudakov looking to drive forward with the ball and Shaparenko helping to recycle possession. These players link the defense to the attack by finding the wide players or the striker.

Ukraine uses a lone striker in A.Dovbyk to lead the line. He acts as a target man to hold up the ball and bring others into play. M.Mudryk and V.Tsygankov operate in the half-spaces as attacking midfielders, with Mudryk using his pace and dribbling style to threaten the flank. These two players are tasked to press the opposition back line and make runs into the box. The attacking movement relies on Mudryk and Tsygankov pulling wide to stretch the defense before looking to play through the lines to Dovbyk.

This formation offers the advantage of numerical superiority in the central midfield area to control the game. The team can also use the speed of transition through Mudryk to catch opponents off balance. By keeping the midfield compact, Ukraine can effectively deny the opponent time on the ball in dangerous areas.

The 4-5-1 formation allows Ukraine to remain defensively solid while being dangerous on the break. This lineup is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their midfield.
