Starting Lineup

England aims to play a high press and vertical football using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the pitch by winning the ball high up the pitch and attacking with intensity. The goal is to use quick transitions to catch the opposition off guard and create many chances in the final third.

Pickford acts as the lone goalkeeper to start the play from the back. The back three consists of Walker, Stones, and Guehi. Stones plays as the central defender to hold the line and organize the unit. Walker operates as a right centre-back with the ability to cover wide areas, while Guehi provides cover on the left side. This trio remains compact to protect the middle and can step up to squeeze the space when the team presses.

The midfield operates as a central pairing of Rice and Wharton. Rice plays as a single pivot to shield the defence and win the second ball. Wharton connects the defensive and attacking lines by receiving the ball and carrying it forward. Saka and TAA operate as wide midfielders who provide much needed width. Saka pushes high on the left to stretch the defence, while TAA uses his passing range from the right to switch play.

In the attacking third, the team utilizes three attackers. Kane plays as a pressing centre-forward who can hold up the ball and find the feet of the striker. Bellingham operates on the left as an inverted winger to cut inside and arrive late into the box. Foden plays on the right to create in tight spaces and combine in small areas. These forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball and keep the game in the opponent half.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The wide presence of Saka and TAA allows England to create wide overloads when they push forward. Another strength is the speed of transition when Rice or Wharton win the ball and immediately look to break quickly.
