This five man unit can shift to cover gaps and press in a mid-block to win the ball back high up the pitch.

When attacking, 17 operates as a lone striker. He will press from the front to force a long ball and disrupt the build up. He must also hold up the ball and lay it off to bring others into play. 10 looks to arrive late into the box to support the play, while 7 and 11 push up to provide support. The wide players look to spread wide and pull the opposition defenders out of position. The aim is to use quick combinations to hit in behind on the transition and create chances.

One major strength is the ability to maintain compactness when defending. By having five players in the middle, Manchester United can compress the midfield and make it very hard for the opponent to pass through the center. Another advantage is the speed of transition. Once 16 or 18 intercept a pass, they can quickly find 10 or 17 to start a break.
