Starting Lineup

AEK relies on a heavy defensive presence and rapid transitions, utilizing a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting opponents on the break. The team focuses on staying compact to deny space in the central areas, making them very hard to break down.

Garcia guards the goal while the defense organizes into a narrow defensive block. Jønsson sits in the middle of the back three to command the area and win headers. Pineda acts as a left centre back to provide cover, while Ljubičić operates as the right centre back to help manage the width of the box. To provide width, Milson and Eliasson act as attacking wing backs who push high to support the play. This five man unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and keep the shape tight when the opposition has the ball.

The midfield functions as a flat four designed to protect the center. Vida and Valentini form a double pivot to shield the back line, with Vida often working to intercept passes and break up play. Mbabu and Bjørkan occupy the wide areas as midfielders to provide defensive cover for the wing backs. This midfield group aims to win the second ball and quickly find the outlets to start a move. They connect the defense to the attack by recycling possession and looking to play through the lines once the ball is recovered.

In the attacking phase, Brigniolli acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball and bring others into play. The team builds attacks by using the wing backs to spread wide, allowing Mbabu and Bjørkan to support the forward presence. AEK looks to use the width provided by Eliasson and Milson to deliver crosses into the box or play quick combinations. The goal is to use the movement of the wide players to create runs in behind the opposition defense during a transition.

One major advantage for AEK is the ability to maintain extreme compactness when defending deep in their own half. The formation also offers the capacity for quick transitions, as the wide players can quickly turn from a defensive position into an attacking one. This allows the team to exploit the space left behind an advancing opponent.
