Starting Lineup

SK Rapid aims to play a defensively solid style of football focused on sitting deep and hitting on the break. This 5-4-1 formation relies on a compact defensive block to deny space in the central areas. The lineup is built to absorb pressure and use the width of the pitch to transition quickly once the ball is won.

Druijf sits between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line operates as a back five, with Grgic and Oswald acting as the central pair to protect the middle while Schaub provides cover. The wide defenders, Seidl and Lang, act as attacking wing backs who must track back to support the central defenders when the team loses possession. This defensive unit functions by keeping a narrow shape to force the opposition out wide.

In front of the defense, a four man midfield works to control the middle thirds. Bolla and J. Auer act as a double pivot to shield the back five and win the second ball. Raux Yao plays in the left half space as a left attacking midfielder, while Cvetkovic occupies the right side to provide width. These players connect the defensive lines to the attack by recycling possession or playing through the lines to catch the opponent off guard.

The attacking movement is centered around a lone striker, Hedl, who acts as a target man to hold up the ball. Because the team lacks a second striker, the wide players Raux Yao and Cvetkovic must provide the necessary service from the flanks. The attack is built through quick transitions where the wing backs, Seidl and Lang, push forward to create overloads. This creates opportunities for Hedl to play with his back to goal and lay it off for late runners.

SK Rapid gains a significant advantage through their ability to maintain compactness when defending. By squeezing the space between the midfield and the back five, they make it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.
