As captain, Nowotny © leads the unit, acting as the dominant presence in the air to clear the lines. Živković and Wörns play as wide centre-backs, ready to step up into midfield or cover the space behind the wing-backs. This defensive unit works to maintain a high line to keep the team compact and ready to trigger a press.

The midfield acts as a five man block designed to control the central areas. Ramelow acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. He is supported by Lehnhoff and Heintze, who operate as the central engine to win the second ball and carry the ball forward. Émerson and Beinlich occupy the wide areas, acting as attacking wing-backs who provide width. They push high to overlap the midfield and create passing lanes, while also being tasked to track back and defend the wide channels when the team loses the ball.

In the final third, Bayer Leverkusen uses two forwards to pin the opposition back line. Rink and Kirsten operate as a strike partnership, looking to run in behind the defence. Kirsten often acts as a target man to hold up the ball, allowing Rink to make runs into the pockets of space. The attacking unit focuses on link-up play between the lines, with the wing-backs, Émerson and Beinlich, delivering crosses into the box. They press from the front to force a long ball and win it back quickly in transition.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, such as numerical superiority in the central midfield.
