Starting Lineup

Lucas (Ravaglia) · Beukema (Ilic) · Calafiori (X) · Lucumi (Posh) · Freuler (Biscia) · O'Riley (Urbanski) · Gosens (X) · Ndoye (Holm) · Ferguson (Fabian) · Zirkzee (Karlsson) · Mikautadze (Castro)

Bologna seeks to dominate the ball and control the tempo through a high press and heavy possession, utilizing a 3-6-1 formation. This lineup aims to squeeze the pitch and overwhelm the middle of the park to ensure constant pressure on the opponent. The tactical intent is to use high density in the center to force mistakes and quickly progress the ball into the final third.

Lucas starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back line works as a back three with Beukema acting as the central anchor. To his right, Lucumi provides cover while Calafiori operates on the left. The defenders are expected to play out from the back to start attacks. Calafiori and Lucumi must be ready to step up to squeeze the space, while Beukema stays deeper to sweep behind the high line.

The midfield is the engine of the Bologna lineup. A three man midfield consists of Freuler and O'Riley who work to control the center and win the second ball. Freuler acts as the link between the defense and the attack, while O'Riley drives forward with the ball. Ferguson and Zirkzee operate in the half spaces as two tens behind the striker to create chaos. Gosens and Ndoye provide width from the wide areas, with Gosens often pushing high to act as an attacking wing back.

In the final third, Mikautadze acts as the lone striker. He is tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of the teammates arriving late into the box. Zirkzee and Ferguson look to make runs into the space between the opposition defense and midfield to receive on the half turn. The wingers Ndoye and Gosens spread wide to stretch the defense, creating gaps in the middle for the attacking midfielders to exploit. The team attacks in combinations to break the line of the opposition.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it hard for opponents to keep the ball. The ability to press in coordinated waves allows the team to win it back high up the pitch. Wide overloads are frequent as Gosens and Ndoye push forward to support the attacking unit, forcing the opposition to defend wide areas.

The 3-6-1 is a dominant setup designed to control games through central density and high pressing. This formation is best suited for facing teams that try to play out from the back or struggle to handle central overloads.
