Starting Lineup

Kramaric · Sosa · Stanisic · Livakovic · Gvardiol · Sutalo · Brozovic · Pasalic · Kovacic · Vlasic · Majer

Croatia plays with a heavy focus on defensive solidity and rapid transitions using a 5-2-3. This formation is built to sit in a mid block and hit the opposition in behind when the ball is won. The lineup allows the team to stay compact and hard to break down while remaining ready to counter at pace.

Livakovic guards the goal to provide security at the back. The defensive unit uses a back five where Brozovic acts as the central man to organize the line with his strong positional sense. Sutalo and Gvardiol operate as the wide centre-backs, with Gvardiol using his ball playing ability to help move the ball out of the back. Stanisic and Sosa play as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width in the final third. They must track back quickly to form a narrow defensive block when the team loses possession.

The midfield is built around a double pivot. Kovacic and Pasalic work together to control the center of the pitch. In this role, Kovacic uses his ball carrying to drive the team forward and link the defense to the attack. Pasalic works to win the second ball and help protect the defensive line. This duo works to recycle possession and play through the lines to find the attackers.

The attack uses three players across the front. Kramaric operates as a pressing centre forward who can hold up the ball and link play. Vlasic and Majer play wide to stretch the defence. Vlasic often looks to cut inside to create scoring opportunities, while Majer provides a way to switch play. The team looks to create overlaps from the wing backs to deliver crosses into the box. This movement allows Kramaric to find the feet of his teammates and create space for runs in behind.

A major strength for Croatia is the ability to create wide overloads. When Stanisic and Sosa push forward, they join the wingers to create numerical superiority on the flanks. The formation also offers great compactness when defending in a mid block. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find space in the middle. The speed of transition allows the team to break quickly and move forward in seconds.

This 5-2-3 formation relies on defensive discipline and quick counters. It is most effective when facing teams that play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
