Athletic plays a very direct brand of football built on verticality and intense pressing. This lineup uses a 4-4-2 formation to control the pitch through work rate and compactness. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and move quickly toward the opposition goal.

U. Simon protects the goal and organizes the back line. The defensive unit consists of a flat back four that maintains a compact shape to deny space between the lines. Capa plays as the right back to provide width, while Yuri operates as the left back to support the flank. In the middle, Iñigo Martinez and U. Nuñez act as the central defenders, with Iñigo Martinez using his aerial strength to defend set pieces and U. Nuñez providing cover to sweep behind the high line when the team pushes up.

The midfield operates in two banks of four to squeeze the space. Unai Vencedor and Mikel Vesga form a central pairing where Unai Vencedor shields the defence while Mikel Vesga tries to carry the ball forward into the half spaces. On the flanks, De Marcos and Muniain provide the width. De Marcos works hard to track back and defend, while Muniain looks to find pockets of space and create chances. This midfield group works to win the second ball and transition the play from the defensive third to the attacking third.

Athletic utilizes two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defence. Jorge Paulo and Raúl Garcia lead the line, often pressing the opposition centre backs to force a long ball. Jorge Paulo acts as the main presence up front, while Raúl Garcia looks for runs in behind the defence. The team relies on the wide players to deliver crosses into the box to find the strikers. They often use combinations between the two forwards to hold up the ball and allow the midfielders to join the attack.

One major advantage of this Athletic formation is the ability to press in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to build out from the back. The team also benefits from the numerical superiority in the central areas when the wide midfielders tuck inside. This creates a very compact block that is difficult to break down through the middle.

This 4-4-2 formation is designed to overwhelm opponents through physical presence and high energy. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play under pressure or those that leave large gaps behind their defensive line.
