Netherlands National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
van der Sar · F. de Boer · Rijkaard · van Dijk · Koeman · Neeskens · van Basten · Bergkamp · Robben · Cruyff · GullitThe Netherlands play a high pressing and vertical game using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the central areas and force opponents into mistakes in their own half. By crowding the middle of the pitch, the Oranje aim to win the ball back high up the pitch and quickly attack the goal through direct passing and forward runs.
van der Sar operates in goal to protect the two central defenders. van Dijk and Koeman form a back two that must defend large amounts of space behind them. van Dijk uses his aerial strength to win headers and his ability to cover ground to sweep behind a high line. Koeman plays as a ball playing defender to initiate play from the back and switch play to the flanks. They must step up together to keep the defensive line high and squeeze the space.
The midfield is a powerful five man unit that controls the game. Rijkaard and F. de Boer act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Neeskens provides high pressing intensity to win the ball back, while Gullit uses his passing range to carry the ball forward. Cruyff plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to play through the lines and connect the midfield to the attack.
The attack features three players across the front line. Bergkamp acts as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and find the feet of the striker. Robben plays on the right and looks to cut inside to create shooting opportunities. van Basten acts as the central striker to hold up the ball and link up play with the midfielders. The front three work to press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
This formation offers massive numerical superiority in midfield. Having five players in the middle allows the Netherlands to compress the midfield and win the second ball frequently. The ability to press in coordinated waves also makes it very difficult for opponents to build play out from the back or find passing lanes through the center.
The 2-5-3 is a brave formation that relies on total control of the center of the pitch. It is best suited for games where the team can pin the last defender and overwhelm the opposition through the middle.
