Starting Lineup

BUFFON · BONUCCI · BARZAGLI · CHIELLINI · PIRLO · DE ROSSI · MARCHISIO · DARMIAN · DE SCIGLIO · ROSSI · PELLE'

Italy aims to control the tempo of the game through a 3-6-1 formation. This lineup is built to keep possession and squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch. The main goal is to use the central players to dictate play and limit the chances of the opposition through constant ball movement.

BUFFON commands the goal and organizes the defensive unit. The back line works as a narrow defensive block with BARZAGLI, BONUCCI, and CHIELLINI. BARZAGLI and CHIELLINI act as the wide center backs to cover the channels, while BONUCCI plays as a ball playing defender in the middle. They are strong in the air and will step up to intercept passes or sweep behind the line if needed. This defensive trio works as a single unit to deny the turn to any striker.

The midfield provides the heartbeat of this Italy side. PIRLO plays as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and find the feet of the striker. DE ROSSI and MARCHISIO act as the central connection, with one often dropping to help PIRLO while the other drives forward with the ball. DE SCIGLIO and DARMIAN provide the width by spreading wide, but they must track back to help when the team is out of possession. ROSSI plays in the hole to link the midfield to the attack and search for space between the lines.

The attacking front features PELLE' as a lone striker to hold up the ball and win the header. He plays as a target man to allow ROSSI to act as a second striker in the hole. ROSSI looks to arrive late into the box to score. The forwards press the opposition back line to win the ball back high up the pitch. The team attacks through combinations in the middle or by using DARMIAN and DE SCIGLIO to get to the byline and whip it in. This movement is designed to create runs in behind the opposition defense.

A major strength of this 3-6-1 is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows the team to dominate the ball. Another advantage is the ability to press in a mid-block to force a long ball from the opponent. The team stays very compact when defending, making it difficult for the other side to play through the lines.

This formation focuses on defensive solidity and central control. It is most effective when playing against teams that rely on wide play and can be caught on the transition.
