In front of the back five, a four man midfield works to shield the defence. Datković and Oroz operate as the central pair, with the job of winning the second ball and playing through the lines. They must press in a mid-block to deny the opposition time on the ball. Jurčec and Mamić occupy the wide positions, acting as wide midfielders who must drop into a low block when defending. These players are responsible for connecting the defensive unit to the lone striker, often recycling possession to find space.

The attacking phase relies heavily on the lone striker, Josipović, who must hold up the ball and find the feet of oncoming runners. Since there is no second striker, the team looks to hit in behind on the transition. Mijić and Vizinger push up to provide width and deliver crosses into the box. Josipović will often have to fight for long balls or try to pull wide to create space for Jurčec and Mamić to arrive late into the box. The team attacks through quick combinations and direct play.

A major advantage of this lineup for Croatia is the extreme compactness when defending. By having five defenders and four midfielders, they make it nearly impossible to play through the lines. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Mijić and Vizinger push forward.
