Starting Lineup

Robertson · Elliott · Díaz · Konaté · Bradley · Jota · Bajcetic · Gravenberch · Summerville · Bijlow · Calafiori

Liverpool looks to dominate through a high press and verticality using a 4-5-1. This formation aims to win the ball high up the pitch and move quickly through the lines to catch opponents out of position. By using five players in the middle of the pitch, Liverpool seeks to control the tempo and ensure they are never outnumbered when they lose possession.

Bijlow operates as the goalkeeper, acting as the last line of defense when the team pushes high. The back four consists of a flat defensive line where Bradley and Robertson play as full backs. Bradley pushes forward to provide width, while Robertson works to overlap and send crosses into the box. In the center, Konaté and Calafiori act as the central defenders, with Konaté using his aerial strength to win headers and Calafiori providing cover to sweep behind the high line. This unit works to squeeze the space and keep the opposition from playing out from the back.

The midfield is a five man block designed to win the second ball and control the center. Bajcetic and Gravenberch form a double pivot to shield the defense, with Gravenberch often looking to carry the ball forward to drive the team into the final third. Elliott and Summerville operate in the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack, while Díaz occupies the right central midfield role to link play. This group focuses on pressing in a mid block and ensuring the distances between players remain tight to prevent opponents from playing through the lines.

In the attacking phase, Jota acts as a lone striker and a pressing centre forward. He works to pin the last defender and creates space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The team attacks with width provided by the full backs, but Jota also looks to drop into channels to link up play with the advancing midfielders. When the team wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition, using the movement of Díaz and Elliott to support the lone forward in the box.

This lineup offers the advantage of compactness when defending, making it difficult for opponents to find gaps in the middle. The presence of Gravenberch and Bajcetic provides stability, allowing the team to transition from a defensive block to an attacking wave very quickly. Additionally, the movement of the wide midfielders helps to stretch the defense and create one on one situations for the wingers or full backs.

This 4-5-1 formation relies on intense pressing and quick transitions to overwhelm the opponent. It is best suited for matches against teams that try to play out from the back and struggle with high physical intensity.
