Starting Lineup

Rajković · Jaume Costa · Copete · Valjent · Gio · P. Maffeo · Manu Morlanes · O. Mascarell · Dani R · Amath Ndiaye · Vedad Muriqi

Mallorca relies on a direct and hardworking identity using a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to defend in a mid-block and strike quickly when the ball is won. The goal is to keep the lines close together and force the opponent to play around the edges rather than through the middle.

Rajković stays on his line to organize the back four. The defensive unit functions as a flat back four that stays narrow to deny the turn in central areas. Jaume Costa and Gio play as the wide defenders to cover the flanks. In the center, Valjent and Copete act as the central defenders to win headers and protect the zone in front of the goal. Valjent provides cover and works to sweep behind the line when the team pushes up.

The midfield operates in two banks of four to maintain compactness. O. Mascarell acts as a deep-lying playmaker to shield the defense and recycle possession. Dani R plays next to him to connect the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward. On the wings, Manu Morlanes and P. Maffeo provide the width needed to stretch the defense. Manu Morlanes is tasked to track back and help the defense, while P. Maffeo looks to get to the byline and deliver a cross.

In the final third, Mallorca uses two forwards to create pressure. Vedad Muriqi plays as a target man, utilizing his aerial strength to hold up the ball and win the second ball. Amath Ndiaye plays as a second striker, looking to make runs in behind to exploit the space left by the defenders. The team attacks in transition by playing long balls to find the feet of the striker or by using quick combinations to hit in behind on the transition.

One major advantage is the ability to maintain compactness when defending. The two lines of four make it hard to find passing lanes through the center. Another strength is the speed of transition, allowing the team to move from a defensive block to an attacking phase very quickly. This allows Mallorca to isolate wide players in one on one situations when the ball is played out wide.

This 4-4-2 formation is designed for a high level of discipline and directness. It is best suited for matches against possession based teams that push many players forward and leave space to exploit.
