Width is provided by Bonhof and Weber who can push high to whip it in or cut it back to the edge of the box. This allows the forwards to find space in the channels.

This 5-3-2 formation offers great compactness when defending, making it difficult to play through the centre. The presence of Muller, Kress, and K.Gruber provides strength in the air and allows the team to defend zonally against crosses. Furthermore, the speed of transition allows Germany to move from a defensive block to an attacking phase very quickly. This makes them dangerous when they can catch an opponent out of position.
