Focusing on a compact defensive block and quick transitions, Atlético uses a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep, squeeze the space in the middle, and hit opponents on the break. The team relies on a disciplined low block to deny the turn to attackers before launching rapid vertical attacks.

J.Oblak operates between the posts, providing a reliable presence to command the box. The defensive unit works as a back five with J.Gimenez acting as a dominant figure in the air. Beside him, A.Witsel and M.Hermoso form a coordinated line to cover space and intercept passes. On the flanks, M.Llorente and S.Lino act as attacking wing backs to provide width. These wide defenders are tasked to push up when the team has the ball but must track back quickly to form a narrow defensive block when out of possession.

The midfield operates in a flat four to protect the central zones. Koke acts as the primary engine, helping to connect the defensive and attacking lines while looking to recycle possession. R.De Paul works alongside him to press aggressively and win the second ball in the middle. On the edges of this unit, A.Griezmann plays as a wide midfielder who often drifts inside to create, while P.Barrios provides balance on the right side. This group aims to compress the midfield and deny the pivot of the opposition.

In the attacking phase, A.Correa acts as a lone striker to lead the line. He is tasked to hold up the ball and work as a pressing centre-forward to bother the opposition back line. The team builds attacks by using the wing backs to stretch the defence and find the feet of the striker. A.Griezmann often moves from the left into the half-spaces to play one-two combinations with A.Correa. This movement creates runs in behind and allows the team to attack in transition with speed.

This formation offers several tactical advantages for Atlético. The primary strength is the compactness when defending, which makes it very hard for opponents to find gaps between the lines.
