Jan Oblak guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back four consists of a central pairing of Stefan Savic and Mario Hermoso, where Savic provides aerial strength and Hermoso acts as a ball playing defender. On the flanks, Nahuel Molina works as an attacking full back to provide width, while Reinildo plays a more defensive role to ensure the team stays compact. This unit defends zonally to keep the team organized and difficult to penetrate.

In the center of the pitch, the midfield operates in two banks of two to maintain a narrow block. Rodrigo De Paul and Koke form a central pairing, with Koke acting as the engine to recycle possession and De Paul driving forward to carry the ball forward. They work to shield the defense and win the second ball in the middle third. On the wings, Rodrigo Riquelme and Samuel Niguez provide the width, tasked with tracking back to help the full backs and then pushing up to support the attack.

The attacking duo consists of Antoine Griezmann and Angel Correa. Correa operates as a pressing centre-forward to bother the opposition back line, while Griezmann plays as a second striker in the hole to link the midfield and attack. They look to play in combinations and use quick one-two passes to split the defence with a through ball. The goal is to use the space behind the opposition defense, with Correa making runs in behind to exploit any gaps left during transitions.

This lineup offers a significant advantage through its compactness when defending, making it hard for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. Atlético can also create wide overloads when Molina and Riquelme push up together. The ability to transition quickly with Griezmann and Correa allows the team to punish teams that overcommit in attack.
