Netherlands National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Verbruggen (GK) · Van Dijk (CB) · Ake (CB) · De Vrij (CB) · Reijndeers (CM) · Schouten (CDM) · Veerman (CM) · Gakpo (LW) · Simons (RW) · Depay (ST) · Weghorst (ST)Seeking to overwhelm the opposition through constant pressure, the Netherlands operate with a 3-3-4 formation. This lineup is built to play with a high press and heavy verticality to keep the ball deep in the attacking third. The Oranje want to dominate matches by pushing as many players forward as possible to keep the ball in the opponent half.
Verbruggen starts in goal to manage the high line. The back three consists of De Vrij on the right, Van Dijk in the middle, and Ake on the left. Van Dijk uses his aerial strength and immense presence to command the area and sweep behind the high line. De Vrij and Ake must stay compact to cover the space left behind when the midfielders push up. The whole unit aims to squeeze the space and force the opposition to play long balls.
The midfield relies on a single pivot to provide stability. Schouten sits in front of the defenders to shield the line and intercept passes. Reijndeers and Veerman work as the two central midfielders who connect the defence to the attack. Veerman looks to play through the lines with his passing range to find the front four. They must work hard to win the second ball and recycle possession when the initial press is broken.
The attacking unit uses four players to stretch the defence. Simons plays on the right and likes to cut inside to create chances, while Gakpo operates on the left using his dribbling to beat defenders. Weghorst serves as a traditional target man to win headers and hold up the ball, allowing Depay to play as a second striker. Depay looks to arrive late into the box to finish chances. This formation is designed to create runs in behind and force the opposition to defend in a low block.
A major advantage of this 3-3-4 lineup is the massive numerical superiority it creates in the final third. By using four attackers, the Netherlands can isolate wide players in one on one situations and use wide overloads when the midfielders step up. The ability to press in coordinated waves from Simons, Gakpo, Weghorst, and Depay makes it difficult for any team to play out from the back.
This formation is a heavy attacking tool used to break down stubborn defences through sheer numbers. It is most effective when the Oranje need to win a game quickly or hunt for goals against a side that sits deep.
