Uruguay plays with a 5-2-3 formation. The team relies on a high press and quick transitions to catch opponents out of position. This formation is built to play a direct game that uses speed to break the lines.
Rochet guards the goal as the lone goalkeeper. The defence operates with a back five that can shift into a narrow defensive block. Ugarte plays as the central defender to anchor the unit and win the ball. Araujo and Olivera sit on either side of him, using their aerial strength and speed to cover the space behind a high line. Nández and Viña act as attacking wing backs to provide width. They are expected to push up the pitch to overlap the attackers and then track back to defend the flanks.
The midfield consists of a double pivot with Valverde and De La Cruz. Valverde uses his energy and passing range to drive forward and connect the lines. De La Cruz works to win the second ball and press aggressively to disrupt the opponent. This duo helps the team transition from a mid block into an attacking phase by finding the players in the half spaces.
The attacking front line uses three players to pressure the opposition. Núñez acts as a pressing centre forward who works to pin the last defender and force mistakes. On the flanks, Maxi Araújo and Pellistri work as wide wingers who hug the touchline to stretch the defence. This allows the team to attack in combinations, where wing backs can deliver early crosses or cut it back for the forwards to arrive late into the box.
A major strength of this Uruguay lineup is the ability to create wide overloads. When Nández and Viña push forward, they create numerical superiority on the flanks. The formation also offers great compactness when defending, making it very difficult for teams to play through the middle. Finally, the speed of transition allows the team to hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can set the offside trap.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a balance between defensive solidity and rapid attacking bursts. It is best suited for matches against possession based teams that can be punished on the break.
