Starting Lineup

Depay · Malen · Simons · Maatsen · Frimpong · Veerman · Schouten · Verbruggen · van Dijk · van de Ven · de Ligt

Aiming for high intensity and verticality, the Netherlands utilizes a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move forward with purpose. The tactical identity focuses on aggressive pressing and quick transitions to catch opponents out of position.

Verbruggen starts the build up from the back. The back three consists of van de Ven, van Dijk, and de Ligt. van Dijk uses his passing range to find teammates and his aerial strength to defend set pieces. van de Ven provides the speed to cover space behind the line when the team steps up. de Ligt acts to win the second ball and clear the lines during defensive phases. They defend zonally to maintain a high line.

In the middle of the pitch, Veerman and Schouten form a central pairing. Schouten plays to deny the pivot and protect the center of the formation. Veerman acts as a carrier to progress through the thirds and link the defense to the attack. In possession, the team builds play through the carrier and the wide wing backs to stretch the defence. On the flanks, Maatsen and Frimpong act as attacking wing backs who will push up to provide width and overlap the winger.

The attacking unit features Depay as a pressing centre-forward. Depay works to pin the last defender and hold up the ball for others. Malen and Simons play as inverted wingers on the flanks. On the left, Malen will cut inside to find space in the middle. Simons will pull wide to stretch the defence before he cuts inside to play through the lines. In transition, they look to break quickly. These movements allow the team to attack in combinations.

One major advantage is the ability to create wide overloads because Frimpong and Maatsen push so high. This forces the opposition to pull defenders out of position. Another strength is the capacity to press in coordinated waves from the front. By using Depay, Malen, and Simons to trigger a press, the Netherlands can win it back high up the pitch.

This 3-4-3 formation is a high tempo system built for dominance. It is best suited for matches against teams that prefer to sit deep and defend in a low block.
