Inter looks to control the game through a solid base and quick transitions using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to play with a heavy emphasis on defensive solidity while utilizing the width of the pitch during attacking phases. By maintaining a compact block, the team can easily shift between a deep defensive stance and a vertical offensive style that exploits gaps behind the opposition.

Yann Sommer acts as the last line of defense, starting the build up from the back. The defensive unit operates as a back three with a central man in Francesco Acerbi, flanked by Benjamin Pavard and Alessandro Bastoni. Bastoni acts as a ball playing defender who can carry the ball forward, while Acerbi provides aerial strength in the middle. Matteo Darmian and Federico Dimarco operate as attacking wing backs, providing the width needed to stretch the opposition. Dimarco is known for his crossing ability and high energy, while Darmian provides balance on the right side.

The midfield functions as a three man midfield with a carrier. Hakan Calhanoglu operates as the deep lying playmaker, dropping deep to recycle possession and switch play with his wide passing range. Nicolo Barella works as a box to box midfielder, driving forward with the ball to press in a mid block and link the lines. Henrikh Mkhitaryan provides intelligence in the half spaces, helping to connect the defense to the front two. This midfield group works to squeeze the space between the lines and win the second ball to maintain control.

Up front, Inter uses a partnership of two forwards to pin the last defender. Lautaro Martinez works as a pressing centre forward to force long balls from the opposition, while Marcus Thuram uses his strength to hold up the ball and create space. The duo often combines in tight spaces to play one twos and create runs in behind. When the wing backs like Dimarco push high, the two strikers can drop slightly deeper to create numerical superiority in the middle, allowing the team to attack in combinations.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads from the overlapping wing backs. When Darmian or Dimarco push forward, they force the opposition wingers to track back, creating space for the midfielders to advance. Another strength is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and three midfielders can quickly drop into a low block to deny the turn. This makes Inter very difficult to break down centrally.
