Starting Lineup

Krankl · Ocwirk · Hanappi · Prohaska · Sindelar · Bican · Alaba · Sara · Hiden · Pezzey · Happel

Austria aims to overwhelm the opposition through central congestion and a massive midfield presence. The team plays a 2-6-2 formation that prioritizes controlling the ball in the middle third. This is a lineup built to dominate the centre and force the opposition into wide areas or long balls.

Hiden operates as the goalkeeper. The defensive line consists of a narrow two-man block with Pezzey and Happel. Without wide defenders, Pezzey and Happel must be ready to cover the flanks and hold the line against wingers. They act as ball playing defenders who must also be dominant in the air to clear lines when the team is forced to defend deep.

The midfield is a massive block consisting of three deep players and three advanced players. Alaba, Ocwirk, and Sara sit in a deep trio to shield the defence. Alaba and Ocwirk can drop between the centre-backs to receive the ball and start the build up. Prohaska, Hanappi, and Sindelar act as the creative engine, occupying the half-spaces to link the defensive and attacking lines. This heavy concentration of players allows the team to win the second ball and pass through the lines easily.

Up front, the team utilizes a two-man forward partnership. Krankl and Bican lead the line, often working in combinations to pull defenders out of position. One striker may hold up the ball to allow the other to make runs in behind. They press from the front to win the ball high up the pitch and force the opposition to play long. The attacking unit relies on the midfielders to find the feet of the striker or deliver early balls into the box.

The primary advantage is the massive numerical superiority in the midfield. This allows Austria to squeeze the space and control the tempo of the match. Additionally, the proximity of the players allows them to press in pairs and win it back high up the pitch, creating immediate chances in transition.

The 2-6-2 formation is a centralizing force designed to suffocate the opponent's control of the game. It is best suited for matches where the team can use heavy possession to pin the opponent in their own half.
