F.Calvo (C) leads the line as a dominant presence, while J.Mitchell and J.Vargas cover the spaces behind. On the flanks, K.Fuller and R.Matarrita act as attacking wing backs, tasked with providing width in possession but also dropping back to create a five man line when defending. The whole unit works to stay close together to squeeze the space between the lines.

The midfield operates in a flat four to protect the defensive unit. O.Galo acts as a single pivot to shield the defence and win the second ball. Next to him, B.Aguilera and J.Bennette occupy the central roles to compress the midfield and intercept passes. Á.Zamora plays in a more advanced role, acting as an attacking ten behind the striker to link the midfield and attack. This midfield group works to stay narrow, forcing the opposition to play wide and away from the central danger zones.

In the attacking phase, M.Ugalde acts as a lone striker. He must hold up the ball and work to win aerial duels to allow the rest of the team to move up the pitch. The attack relies on the width provided by K.Fuller and R.Matarrita to stretch the defence. When the team wins the ball, they look to hit in behind the opposition defence with quick vertical passes to M.Ugalde. The wingers and Á.Zamora aim to support the striker through runs into the box or by finding him with early deliveries.

Costa Rica possesses the ability to be extremely difficult to break down due to the five man back line. They can also create wide overloads when K.Fuller and R.Matarrita push forward high up the pitch. The compact nature of the formation makes them strong at defending a lead by dropping into a low block.
