Starting Lineup

Petrovic · Viega · Colwill · Disasi · Gusto · Chukwuemeka · Mudryk · Caicedo · Madueke · Nkunku · Lavia

Chelsea focus on a rapid transition game using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to defend in a compact block and strike quickly once the ball is won back. The goal is to remain defensively solid while using the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition during attacking phases.

Petrovic guards the goal and organizes the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three featuring Disasi, Lavia, and Colwill. Colwill acts as a ball playing defender who can play short from the back to start attacks, while Disasi and Lavia provide cover and focus on winning the second ball. Gusto and Viega function as attacking wing backs, tasked to push up the flanks and overlap the wide attackers. They must also track back to ensure the team maintains its defensive positions when under pressure.

The midfield operates with a double pivot consisting of Caicedo and Chukwuemeka. Caicedo uses his high pressing intensity to win the ball high up the pitch and shield the central defenders. Chukwuemeka acts as the link between the defensive and attacking lines, often looking to carry the ball forward and play through the lines. They work to squeeze the space in the middle and deny the opponent the ability to turn in the half spaces.

The attack is led by three players. Madueke and Mudryk operate as wide wingers who often cut inside to find goal scoring positions. Nkunku plays as a pressing centre forward, using his movement to find space between the lines and arrive late into the box. The team builds attacks by using the width of Gusto and Viega to provide crosses, or they can look to play one two combinations in the final third to split the defence with a through ball.

A significant tactical advantage for Chelsea is the ability to create wide overloads. When Gusto and Viega push high, they can isolate wide players in one on one situations. The formation also offers great compactness when defending in a mid block, making it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the centre. This allows the team to win the ball back high up the pitch and break quickly.

This 5-2-3 formation is designed for teams that want to be resilient and strike on the break. It is best suited for games against opponents that dominate possession and play with a high defensive line.
