Fulham Football Formation
Starting Lineup
FRUTOS · FRUTOS · SOTO · PUCHETA · GORNO · SANCHEZ · PESOA · JAURENA · MAYDANA · PESOA · CHAVESFulham relies on a direct and vertical style of football while utilizing a 4-4-2 formation. The lineup focuses on winning the second ball and using the width of the pitch to stretch the defence. The team aims to move through the thirds quickly to exploit gaps in the defensive line. This system is built to play with high intensity and quick transitions.
FRUTOS operates in goal to defend the net. The defensive unit sits in a flat back four with SOTO at left back and FRUTOS at right back. In the center, GORNO and PUCHETA form the central defensive pairing. GORNO and PUCHETA must hold the line and defend zonally to maintain a compact defensive block. SOTO and FRUTOS are tasked to overlap the winger to provide width when the team has the ball, but they must also track back to cover the flanks if possession is lost.
The midfield works in two banks of four to maintain a compact unit. JAURENA plays on the left flank while PESOA operates on the right side. In the center, CHAVES and SANCHEZ form a central pairing to manage the middle. SANCHEZ and CHAVES look to shield the defense and recycle possession to maintain control. They also work to break the line with passes that find the feet of the strikers. JAURENA and PESOA help to squeeze the space in a mid-block to force the opposition into wide areas.
Fulham uses two forwards in a partnership to press the opposition back line. MAYDANA leads the line as the left striker while PESOA plays as the right striker. Both players aim to combine in tight spaces and make runs in behind the defenders. The wingers, JAURENA and PESOA, provide width by staying wide or cutting inside to create central presence. When the team attacks, the full backs SOTO and FRUTOS push up to allow the wingers to find space. This movement creates chances to whip it in to the strikers or play a one-two.
A primary strength of this formation is the ability to press in pairs from the midfield and the attack, which helps the team win it back high up the pitch. The team also benefits from wide overloads when the full backs SOTO and FRUTOS overlap the wide players. This creates numerical superiority in the final third and allows Fulham to deliver early crosses into the box. The speed of transition between the central duo of SANCHEZ and CHAVES and the strikers is another key advantage.
The 4-4-2 provides a reliable way to maintain compactness and exploit spaces on the break. It is best suited for facing teams that commit many players forward and leave space behind their defenders.
