Milan relies on a heavy defensive block to absorb pressure and strike on the break. This 5-3-2 formation is built to remain compact and exploit transitions. The team sits deep to deny space between the lines and waits for the right moment to launch direct attacks.

Fabianski stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back five uses a central trio of Modric, Kjaer, and Smalling to protect the middle. Kjaer uses his aerial strength to win the header and clear the lines, while Smalling covers the space behind. On the flanks, Florenzi acts as an attacking wing back to push up the pitch, while Ansaldi works as a defensive wing back to stay deep and cover the wide areas. The unit works to stay narrow and force the opponent outside.

The midfield works as a three-man unit with Honda in the center. Honda acts to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Valbuena and Leao play on either side of him, with Leao using his dribbling to carry the ball forward through the thirds. Valbuena works to press in a mid-block and intercept passes to start transitions. This group helps to compress the midfield and deny the opponent time on the ball.

Up front, Milan plays with two forwards in a partnership. Immobile works as a pressing centre-forward, constantly moving to pin the last defender and making runs in behind. Farfan plays alongside him, looking to find the feet of the striker or drop into the hole to create space. When the team wins the ball, the wing backs Florenzi and Ansaldi push high to provide width, allowing the forwards to attack the near post or the far post in combinations.

One major advantage for Milan is the compactness when defending. Having five defenders allows the team to stay very narrow and hold a compact shape in a low block. Another strength is the speed of transition. Once Valbuena or Leao win the ball, they can quickly find the strikers to hit in behind on the transition. The wide overloads created by the wing backs also make it hard for the opposition to track back.
