The midfield is controlled by a double pivot consisting of SERGEJ and LUKIC. These two players work to shield the defense and protect the space in front of the center backs. SERGEJ uses his passing range to drive the team forward and connect the defense to the attack. LUKIC is tasked to win the second ball and recycle possession when the team needs to slow the tempo. They must stay close together to prevent the opposition from playing through the center and to ensure they can intercept passes.

Up front, the attacking unit works to stretch the defense. MITROVIC acts as a target man to hold up the ball and win the header in the box. TADIC plays as a second striker in the hole, looking to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines. KOSTIC and ZIVKOVIC stay wide to spread wide and pull the opposition defenders out of position. The wingers look to cut inside to create space for the midfielders or to deliver crosses to the two strikers. This front four works to press the opposition back line in pairs to win it back high up the pitch.

A major strength of this 4-2-4 formation is the ability to create wide overloads and numerical superiority in the final third. Having four attackers allows Serbia to pin the last defender and create multiple passing lanes. Another advantage is the speed of transition. Once the midfield wins the ball, they can immediately hit the opposition in behind with passes to the wingers or the strikers. This creates many opportunities to counter at pace.
