Atlético Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Oblak · Gyokeres · Lino · Llorente · LeNormand · Hancko · Griezmann · Rodri · VanDijk · Merino · Dani OlmoHigh pressing and defensive solidity define the identity of Atlético in this 3-6-1 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the space in the middle and win the ball back high up the pitch.
Oblak sits behind a back three to guard the goal. Hancko acts as the left centre-back, providing coverage while LeNormand takes the right centre-back role. VanDijk leads the line as the central defender, using his aerial strength and ability to sweep behind a high line to mop up danger. This back three can stay narrow to protect the middle or shift wide when the ball moves to the flanks. Defending zonally, the unit aims to clear the lines whenever the opposition enters the final third.
A crowded midfield engine room is designed to dominate possession and press from the front. Rodri sits as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Merino and Griezmann occupy the central spaces, with Griezmann using his passing range to play through the lines. Dani Olmo acts as an attacking ten, playing in the hole to connect the midfield to the attack. Width is provided by Llorente and Lino, with Llorente acting as a wide midfielder who can track back and Lino looking to overlap to stretch the defence.
Up top, Gyokeres works as a lone striker to lead the line. He is expected to hold up the ball and lay it off to allow others to arrive late into the box. Attacking combinations occur in tight spaces between Dani Olmo and the advancing midfielders. As the team moves forward, Gyokeres will try to pin the last defender, creating space for Griezmann or Dani Olmo to make runs in behind. Llorente and Lino push high to provide crosses and cutbacks from the byline.
Numerical superiority in the central areas is a major advantage. By having Rodri, Merino, Griezmann, and Dani Olmo in close proximity, Atlético can easily win the second ball and recycle possession. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front five to trigger a press. This makes it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back without making mistakes.
This 3-6-1 formation provides Atlético with a robust platform for both high pressing and defensive stability. It is a formation best suited for matches against teams that try to play through the middle.
