Starting Lineup

KEISUKE (OSAKO) · TAKEHIRO (TOMIYASU) · MAYA (YOSHIDA) · HIROKI (ITO) · MIKI (YAMANE) · HIDEMASA (MORITA) · DAICHI (KAMADA) · WATARU (ENDO) · AO (TANAKA) · DAIZEN (MAEDA) · KAORU (MITOMA)

Japan plays a direct and high pressing game using a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch and moving quickly toward the opponent goal. The team aims to use energy and work rate to disrupt the opposition build up.

KEISUKE operates between the posts to command the area. The back four functions as a flat line with TAKEHIRO and MAYA acting as the right side of the defense. MAYA provides aerial strength while TAKEHIRO covers the wide areas. On the left, MIKI works as a full back to support the attack while HIROKI sits in the middle as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. This defensive unit keeps the line high to squeeze the space.

The midfield operates in two banks of four to maintain compactness. WATARU sits in the left central midfield role to shield the defense and recycle possession. DAICHI plays as the right central midfielder to carry the ball forward and link the lines. On the flanks, AO works on the left to provide width while HIDEMASA operates on the right. These players work to press in a mid-block and win the second ball once the first line of pressure is broken.

Japan utilizes two forwards to lead the line. KAORU operates as the left striker and DAIZEN plays as the right striker. These two attackers press the opposition back line to force a long ball. They often work in combinations to pull defenders out of position and create runs in behind. The front two aim to find the feet of the striker or hit in behind on the transition to catch the opposition out.

A major advantage for Japan is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The two strikers and four midfielders work together to trigger a press when the ball enters certain zones. This creates chances to win it back high up the pitch. Another strength is the compactness when defending, which makes it hard for opponents to play through the lines.

This 4-4-2 formation relies on intense running and quick transitions to unsettle the opponent. It is best suited for matches where Japan can exploit a high defensive line through speed.
