Ghana National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
ABDUL (NURUDEEN) · MOHAMMED (SALISU) · GIDEON (MENSAH) · ALEXANDER (DJIKU) · ABDUL (BABA) · DANIEL-KOFI (KYEREH) · SALIS (ABDUL SAMED) · ELISHA (OWUSU) · DANIEL (AFRIYIE) · ANTOINE (SEMENYO) · KAMAL (SOWAH)Ghana looks to play a direct and vertical style of football using a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to strike quickly in transition and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition. The team relies on a clear way of playing that focuses on getting the ball into the final third as fast as possible to catch the opponent off guard.
In goal, ABDUL stands ready to command his area. The defensive line is a flat back four that aims to stay compact when defending. ALEXANDER and GIDEON act as the central defenders, where Alexander looks to win the header and Gideon works to cover the space behind him. On the flanks, MOHAMMED and ABDUL operate as full backs, with the responsibility to track back and defend the wide areas while also looking to support the midfield. The unit works together to hold a line and prevent runs in behind.
The midfield works as a flat four to control the central and wide areas. SALIS and ELISHA sit in the middle as a double pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. SALIS drives forward with the ball to transition the play, while ELISHA focuses on winning the second ball and protecting the centre. On the wings, DANIEL-KOFI and DANIEL provide the width, looking to carry the ball forward and deliver crosses into the box. This midfield unit must work hard to squeeze the space and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
The attack features two forwards playing in a partnership to test the opposition centre backs. KAMAL leads the line as a pressing centre forward to force a long ball from the opposition. ANTOINE works closely with him, looking to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind the defence. This duo creates movement that pulls defenders out of position, allowing the wide players to attack the near post or the far post. The team uses combinations in the final third to split the defence and create scoring chances.
One major advantage for Ghana is the ability to use the width of the pitch to create overloads on the flanks. By using DANIEL-KOFI and DANIEL, the team can pull the opposition wide and then quickly switch play to the other side. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can move from a mid-block to an attacking position in seconds. This makes them very dangerous when they win the ball high up the pitch and can hit the opponent on the break.
This 4-4-2 formation provides a balanced way to defend deep and attack with pace. It is a setup best suited for games against teams that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
