Starting Lineup

Diogo Costa · João Mário · Otávio · Fábio Cardoso/Zé Pedro · Wendell · Nico · Alan Varela · Pepe/Baro · Chico · Pepe · Eva

FC Porto focuses on a high press and fast transitions within a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly progress through the thirds to catch the opposition out of position. The goal is to use verticality to stretch the defence and create chances through rapid movement.

Diogo Costa plays between the posts to command the area. The back line operates as a flat back four where Wendell acts as an attacking left back to provide width. João Mário plays as the right back to support the flank, while Otávio defends the right side of the central pairing. Fábio Cardoso or Zé Pedro occupy the left side of the defence, acting as ball playing defenders to help play out from the back. This unit works together to maintain a high line and squeeze the space between the lines.

The midfield utilizes a three man midfield with a carrier and a holding presence. Alan Varela operates as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Nico works as the right sided midfielder to drive forward with the ball and connect the lines. Pepe or Baro plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find the feet of the forwards and arrive late into the box. This group works to win the second ball and ensure the team maintains control of the central areas.

The attacking line consists of three attackers across the front to pressure the opposition back line. Pepe operates on the left wing as an inverted winger to cut inside, while Chico stays wide on the right wing to spread the play. Eva plays as the lone striker to lead the press and hold up the ball for the incoming runners. The team builds play by using the wide players to stretch the defence before looking to play through the lines or use cutbacks from the byline.

FC Porto gains a tactical advantage through the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The midfield trio can quickly win it back high up the pitch to start a counter at pace. Another strength is the wide overloads created when Wendell and Pepe move forward to support the attackers. These movements pin the last defender and create space for late runs from the midfield.

This 4-3-3 formation is built to dominate games through intense pressing and quick transitions. It is best suited for facing teams that try to build play slowly from the back.
