Southampton focuses on being defensively solid and looking to hit opponents on the break using a 5-2-3. This formation is built to play with a heavy emphasis on protecting the central areas while using wide players to stretch the game. The lineup allows the team to sit in a mid-block and wait for the right moment to transition from defense to attack.

Gavin Bazunu operates between the posts to start the build up. The back line functions as a back three with S. Charles, T. Harwood-Bellis, and J. Bednarek working together to defend the middle. Charles acts as a dominant presence in the air to clear long balls, while Bednarek and Harwood-Bellis cover the space behind him. The wing backs, J. Larios and K. Walker-Peters, provide the width by pushing high up the pitch when in possession and tracking back to defend a five man line when the team loses the ball.

The midfield consists of a two man pairing with J. Aribo and C. Alcaraz. This double pivot is responsible for shielding the defense and recycling possession. Aribo acts as a carrier to move the ball from the deep areas, while Alcaraz looks to connect the defensive and attacking lines by playing through the lines. They work to win the second ball in the middle of the pitch to prevent the opposition from controlling the tempo.

Up front, the attack uses three attackers across the front to pin the opposition defenders. A. Armstrong plays as a pressing centre-forward to harass the back line, while K. Sulemana and S. Amo-Ameyaw operate as wide wingers. Sulemana looks to cut inside to create goal scoring chances, whereas Amo-Ameyaw prefers to stay wide to whip it in with crosses. This front three works to make runs in behind to exploit the space left by an advancing opponent.

This Southampton formation offers several tactical advantages. The team can create wide overloads from the overlapping runs of Larios and Walker-Peters against the opposition full backs. They also benefit from extreme compactness when defending in a low block, making it very difficult for opponents to find gaps. The speed of transition allows the front three to hit the opposition defense before they can get organized.

The 5-2-3 is a highly compact formation that relies on defensive discipline and quick wide play. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession, allowing Southampton to exploit the space left behind.
